Tanning lotion comes in many different packages and formulations all designed to open your pores up and enhance UV exposure through increased light absorption. The lotions come in the form of accelerators, self tanning (sunless tanning), tingle, and more.

Tanning lotion with accelerators includes tyrosine, an amino acid that stimulates and increases melanin production and claims to make you tan faster. There is no science to back up those claims, but tanners still spend any amount of money on these kinds of products.

‘Tingle’ is another additive formulation used in tanning lotion that claims to give you a deeper tan by making your skin generate its own heat in the process. Tingle works by increasing microcirculation (blood flow) to the surface of the skin.
